Ted King-Smith, Composer
About me
As a composer I explore the role that music and sound have in a variety of settings including concert music, multimedia, collaborations, street performance, and sonification. Works often utilize electronics and unconventional performer techniques to blur the line between noise and pitch. My musical style blends virtuosity, improvisation, electronics, and stylistic influences from the Classical, Electronic, and American Vernacular genres. My work as a performer and improviser with the Mnemosyne Quartet also informs my compositions as an outlet for experimentation. Recent recognition has come from the National Band Association's William Revelli prize, I Care if You Listen, BMI, the American Prize and the Washington-Idaho Symphony. I’ve been awarded grants from the Kansas City Downtown Council for the Arts and the KCAI and UMKC ArtSounds program, and was a Charlotte Street Foundation Studio Resident from 2016-2018. Notable performers include many University Wind Ensembles, several professional and university chamber ensembles, and individual performers around the country. My music has been performed across the United States and Canada including Helzberg Hall in the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, Late Night at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY, on WFMT and WKCR, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF), the Florida State University New Music Festival, Electronic Music Midwest, and several academic conferences.
Hailing from the Hudson Valley of New York, it was here that I began his love of music with the saxophone at age 8. I graduated from the Hartt School of Music in 2010 with a BM in music education, and studied saxophone with Carrie Koffman and composition with Stephen Gryc and Larry Alan Smith. I then moved west to study composition at Washington State University, where I graduated with an MA in 2012. At WSU my composition teachers included Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn, Ryan Hare, and Scott Blasco, as well as saxophone nd composition study with Greg Yasinitsky. I then went on to attend the University of Missouri – Kansas City where I graduated in May 2017 with a DMA in Music Composition. At UMKC my composition teachers include Chen Yi, James Mobberley, and Paul Rudy.
As an educator, I have taught music in every level of education ranging from pre-k to university. Currently I am a full-time instructor in Audio Engineering at Milwaukee Area Technical College teaching courses in recording and music technology. Previously I was adjunct faculty at Kansas City Kansas Community College and Johnson County Community College where I taught courses in audio, music technology, music theory, and multimedia. I also held teaching assistantships as a graduate student at WSU and UMKC.
Outside of music I enjoy life with my wife Brittany and our two cats Bella and Oliver, as well as biking, hiking, and reading fantasy and science fiction novels.
